The investigation uncovered that a Mexican player who was found to have committed 92 offenses. In light of the Belgian criminal case, the ITIA has announced sanctions against five tennis players. The case involved Grigor Sargsyan, the leader of an international match-fixing gang, who was sentenced to five years in prison.
In a press release, the ITIA identified Mexican player Alberto Rojas-Maldonado as playing a key role in the corruption of other players. This highlights the extent of match-fixing in the sport of tennis. The gang at the center of the Belgian criminal case has been described as the biggest match-fixing ring in tennis, and Rojas-Maldonado’s 92 offenses are second only to Moroccan player Younes Rachidi’s 135. The ITIA’s press release shows that the problem of match-fixing is widespread and must be addressed.
In addition to the sanctions announced by the ITIA, Rojas-Maldonado has been banned from the sport for life and received the maximum fine of $250,000.
While Rojas-Maldonado and the other convicted players may not have been at the top of the tennis world, they are still being held accountable for their actions.
Even though Christopher Diaz reached a career-high ranking of 326, he has still been banned for life and fined $75,000.
The ITIA’s findings show that Jose Antonio Rodriguez was not only guilty of eight breaches himself, but was also found to have acted with Rojas-Maldonado for financial gain. His punishment reflects the seriousness of his crimes.
He was suspended until September 29, 2035.
