John McEnroe makes bold claim about Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek – ‘It will be really hard for Coco to …’

In the upcoming years, John McEnroe says he “expects big things” from Coco Gauff, including more Grand Slam victories. However, he thinks it will be difficult for her “to get close” to Iga Swiatek’s world No. 1 ranking in the near future.

With three Grand Slam victories and nearly ninety weeks at the top of the WTA Rankings, Swiatek has been the most dominant player on the WTA Tour for the past two years.

Aryna Sabalenka replaced her at the top of the rankings after the US Open in September of last year, but she faced tougher competition than in 2022. Nevertheless, she defeated the Belarusian to take the top spot at the end of the year thanks to her incredible undefeated run at the WTA Finals.

However, Gauff had an amazing second half of the season in 2023, winning the US Open at Flushing Meadows in 2023 after defeating Sabalenka in the championship match. Additionally, in August, at the WTA 500 Citi DC Open in Cincinnati, the teenager won her first WTA 1000 title.

There has, of course, been talk that Gauff will win more Grand Slams. Tennis legend John McEnroe is certain that she will, comparing her game to that of men’s world No. 2 and two-time major winner Carlos Alcaraz.

“She [Gauff] is not as big as [Elena] Rybakina, [Aryna] Sabalenka, or [Iga] Swiatek, but she’s extremely athletic the way [Carlos] Alcaraz is. I expect her to win more majors,” the American told Eurosport.

“It can be done. She is in a good place mentally, and added pieces to her team recently like Brad Gilbert, who knows what it takes.

“I expect big things from her and she’s still young. Over the next 10 years I would be surprised if she doesn’t win a bunch of majors.”

McEnroe worries Gauff “won’t get close any time soon,” but he can’t ignore Swiatek when it comes to the top spot.

The commentator included: “Soon there will be more younger players to add to the mix. I think Swiatek has done a great job at keeping up her level for so long now so it will be really hard for Coco to get close to her ranking any time soon though.”

Given that they both lost in the fourth round of the 2023 Australian Open, Swiatek and Gauff don’t have many points to defend this year.

Only the final will see the two of them together as they are on different sides of the draw. Gauff faces Anna Schmiedlova in the opening match of Swiatek’s campaign, which she shares with former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin.
