Why Steve Young feels bad for Patrick Mahomes

Former BYU quarterback Young is concerned about the impact Travis Kelce’s romance with Taylor Swift is having on the Chiefs’ team.

This NFL season, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s romance has been the talk of the town, with Hall of Famer Steve Young weighing in on the romance.

When asked about his feelings regarding the couple’s well-publicized relationship, Young offered a novel response during his Thursday appearance on the “Dying to Ask” podcast: he feels awful for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

What’s happened is unprecedented. “The most famous person on the planet abruptly begins dating an NFL football player,” he remarked.
“That’s crazy.”

According to Young, “injecting something else to think about or to talk about” can be a distraction for football players because the game depends so much on routine.

“Look, Taylor isn’t trying to draw attention to herself. She wishes to attend to watch the match. He said, “Travis doesn’t mean to be a distraction. However, the unintended consequence is that everyone is preoccupied, which is really detrimental to football. To play football is not easy. Being a great player in the NFL is difficult, so you don’t want to take any actions that will make it more difficult. Additionally, Taylor Swift’s distraction during the game makes it difficult in a strange way. Nobody is to blame for it. It is what it is.

Why does Steve Young feel bad for Patrick Mahomes?

His remarks are consistent with his earlier statement to ESPN’s Seth Wickersham this month that “when it happened, I felt bad for Patrick.”

He said, “Having an outside force puts this weight on everyone.” “They may not notice it directly, but when you take a step back, it’s like, holy hell. This is something you’re carrying around. It is everyone’s responsibility to manage. Anyone who denies its inclusion is deceiving themselves.

The former BYU quarterback gave the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff and Kelce’s teammates, especially Mahomes, credit on the podcast for how well they’ve handled the extra attention.

“I think it’s been fun to watch the Chiefs embrace it — handle it really, pretty gracefully — and then go through the increased difficulty and overcome it,” he added.

This season, Young went so far as to imagine a perfect marriage for the pair that Deirdre Fitzpatrick, the podcast host, suggested he think about becoming a romantic comedy writer.

“There’s a part of me that’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, can you imagine if they go to the Super Bowl and she sings the national anthem and then Travis comes onto the field and they kiss?” he said. “It could explode the internet forever.”

Unfortunately for Young, that distinction will go to another country music artist this year. As previously reported by the Deseret News, Roc Nation announced that Reba McEntire will sing the national anthem on February 11.
