Madrid, Spain – December 13, 2024
In an emotional and candid interview, Rafael Nadal spoke publicly for the first time about the health crisis that led to his shocking retirement from professional tennis earlier this year.
Nadal, who announced his retirement in May 2024, revealed that he had been struggling with a debilitating chronic condition that left him in constant pain and unable to perform at his usual high standards.
“It was a constant battle,” Nadal said, his voice cracking with emotion. “I was in pain every day, and it was affecting not just my tennis, but my quality of life. I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t do the things I loved. It was like my body was betraying me.”

Nadal, who had been struggling with injuries for several years, said that he had tried every possible treatment and therapy to alleviate his symptoms, but nothing seemed to work.
“I tried everything,” he said. “I saw doctors, I saw specialists, I tried alternative therapies. I even tried changing my diet and my training regimen. But nothing seemed to make a difference. The pain was always there, lurking just beneath the surface.”
Despite his best efforts to continue playing, Nadal said that he eventually realized that he had no choice but to retire.
“It was a difficult decision, but it was the only one I could make,” he said. “I couldn’t keep going on like that, in constant pain and struggling to perform. It wasn’t fair to myself, and it wasn’t fair to my fans. I owed it to myself and to them to be honest and to retire with dignity.”
Nadal’s retirement sent shockwaves through the tennis world, and he was hailed as a legend and a hero by fans and fellow players alike.
As he looks back on his incredible career, Nadal said that he has no regrets and is proud of everything he achieved.
“I’m proud of what I accomplished,” he said. “I’m proud of the person I became. And I’m grateful for the opportunity to have played the sport I love for so long.”
Nadal’s legacy will live on, inspiring future generations of tennis players and fans. And though he may be retired, his impact on the sport will never be forgotten.
