MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – Italian tennis sensation Jannik Sinner has spoken out about the heartbreaking loss that ruined his festive celebrations.
In an exclusive interview with Tennis Weekly, Sinner revealed that his defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals of the ATP Finals last year was a tough pill to swallow, especially since it came just days before Christmas.
“Losing that match was really tough for me,” Sinner said. “I had been playing some of the best tennis of my life, and to come up just short against Tsitsipas was heartbreaking.
“It was especially tough because it was right before Christmas, and I had been looking forward to spending the holidays with my family and friends. But instead, I was stuck in a hotel room, feeling sorry for myself.”
Sinner, who is known for his intense competitiveness, admitted that he struggled to shake off the disappointment of the loss.
“I’m a perfectionist, and I hate losing,” Sinner said. “So, when I lost that match, it was hard for me to let it go. I kept thinking about what I could have done differently, and it was hard to enjoy the holidays.”
Despite the disappointment, Sinner said that he has learned to move on from the loss and is now focused on the new season.
“I’ve had time to reflect on the loss, and I’ve learned a lot from it,” Sinner said. “I’m excited for the new season, and I’m looking forward to getting back on the court and competing at the highest level.”
Sinner will begin his 2025 season at the Australian Open, where he will be looking to make a deep run in the tournament.
