Madrid, Spain – December 8, 2024
In an exclusive interview, Maria Francisca Perello, wife of tennis icon Rafael Nadal, revealed the surprising reason behind his sudden retirement announcement, contradicting speculation that 2024 would be his final year.
“Rafa’s decision has nothing to do with injury or burnout,” Perello disclosed. “He’s been dealing with a personal family matter that requires his full attention.”
Perello explained that Nadal’s father, Sebastian Nadal, has been battling a serious health issue, prompting Rafa to reevaluate priorities.
“Rafa wants to support his family during this challenging time,” she said. “Tennis will always be his passion, but family comes first.”
Nadal, 38, announced his retirement last month, citing “personal reasons.” The tennis world was stunned, given his remarkable 2023 season.
Perello clarified, “Rafa’s not closing the door on tennis entirely. He’ll reassess his options when the time is right.”
Sources suggest Nadal may consider a comeback or coaching role.
“Rafa’s legacy extends beyond trophies,” Perello concluded. “Family is his greatest achievement.”
